In contemporary parlance, curators are broadly understood as selectors – a simplification that overlooks its roots in care and curiosity. Working primarily in the context of a public art museum, Crystal Mowry’s curatorial work has privileged opportunities for artists to recast the shared resource that is a permanent collection. As a former artist, she treats her role as equal parts co-conspirator and translator, often seeking ways to support artists in the development of new projects. Her work is motivated by a desire to learn, unlearn and learn anew in an effort to suspend the contents of the archive in our present – even if that means troubling the canons that have shaped the institution. In Commit to Memory, Mowry will reflect on the conception and realization of several recent projects, including Black Drones in the Hive, a solo exhibition by Deanna Bowen that is on view at the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery until May 23, 2021.
 
About Crystal Mowry
 
Crystal Mowry is Senior Curator at the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery (KWAG). During her time with KWAG, she has curated and coordinated over a hundred exhibitions. Her solo projects with Ontario-based artists Maggie Groat and Ernest Daetwyler received Exhibition of the Year Awards from the Ontario Association of Art Galleries. She has written curatorial and experimental texts for various artist-focused projects, including Still Move: Brendan Fernandes, a monograph on the performance and installation work of Brendan Fernandes for which she also served as an editor.
