On June 4th, A/CA member Ryan Conrad is hosting a launch and screening event for his new book Toronto Living with AIDS at the DARC Microcinema in Ottawa.
The anthology, a meticulously crafted collection based on Conrad's archival research on Toronto Living With AIDS, a 1990-91 community cable television series that was coordinated by Michael Balser with Vtape and Trinity Square Video. The book is comprised of written analysis, oral history transcripts, full-color video stills, and profound reflections from contemporary media makers, activists, and scholars who have contributed their insights.
The launch event, hosted at the DARC Microcinema within Arts Court, promises to be an engaging and insightful evening. Attendees will be treated to a screening of a superclip of early Canadian AIDS activist video, followed by a brief presentation on the project by Conrad as well as an intergenerational dialogue between him and Darien Taylor, a prominent HIV/AIDS activist, videomaker, and respected figure in the community.
This publication is a collaborative effort between PUBLIC Books, Vtape, and Archive/Counter-Archive. It is available to purchase online via Wilfred-Laurier Press or in-person at Octopus Books in Ottawa.
